Show info | History of American Music is an overview of, primarily, American Music starting just after 1900 and reaching the present day w/a core focus from 1919-1969. The show has a strong jazz and African-American music focus, touching on 'Field Recordings', Blues, Gospel, Religious and early R and B, but also surveying white popular and jazz and swing influenced music, primarily before 1950. Other ethnic and cultural recordings, esoteric recordings, instrumental recordings, vaudeville, dialect comedy and other recorded artifacts from the early years of recorded music also find their way into the show. The recordings themselves are primarily from original source material, primarily 78rpm discs, but also 33rpm discs and, also analog and digital transcriptions of original recordings. The show educates as it entertains and unfolds historic and social themes as related to the music. I try, each show, to, besides informing listeners of the specific dates of the recordings and the musical personnel featured, mention other related information of historical settings or background. However, the program is primarily music presented in a chronological format, which hopefully progresses in a way which leads the listener to their own conclusions. Though I put hours of thought and preparation into each show, with specific musical, and other intentions, it is mostly up to the listener to interpret what they hear. The show begins, proceeds and ends and hopefully, however much of the show a listener might hear on a given day, from part of one song to the whole show, they are enlightened in some way. Because of the historic and sometimes, rare nature of the recordings presented, it is most likely, that, despite the fact that these are older recordings, the listener will be hearing some, or perhaps, most of this music for the first time. Certainly, much of this music is very rarely heard on the airwaves, anywhere. |
